This week Diana will be joined by Sharon Johnson, an Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Virginia Tech. Her first book, Boundaries of Acceptability analyzed bourgeois feminine spaces and transgressive texts in literature by Flaubert and Maupassant and paintings and prints by Paul Cézanne and Mary Cassatt. She has also published articles on working class women, the city of Paris, and the crime of rape during the 19th century. Her current project, Bodies that Speak: Narrating and Interpreting Rape in Law, Medicine and the Penny Presses (canards sanglants) of Nineteenth-Century France, is a book-length study on the representations of rape in legal, medical and journalistic discourses of nineteenth-century France.
